Remember when you first entered a school library?
Were you like me; overwhelmed by the books crammed in shelves and wondering how you would find what you needed to know?
Finding a book in a library is a life skill, and it’s a classification scheme that’s behind it all. You’re reading this post now because you’re already a teacher and leader for your own family knowledge.
The benefit of a classification skill is that it stops you feeling overwhelmed and lost in any library entered throughout your life. Why then, don’t we all have access to a standardised system that supports us in organizing our own family knowledge? Isn’t your story of family events just as important as finding a book?
I’ll always remember meeting our high school librarian in 1977 with us all seated on the school library’s new plastic blue and metal chairs.
“Six legs on the ground insects. And not a peep escapes from your feeble cake holes while I’m explaining how to use the most important resource in this school – my library.”
Our librarian was built like a rugby front row prop, with a neck as thick as a famous book published in 2009: The Complete Miss Marple, by Agatha Christie. Two things struck and stuck like a paper spit-ball after his lesson.
The first, his ability to convey fear and humour in just one sentence; calling us insects was a stroke of genius. With the four legs of our chair and our own on two feet we had changed into insects; we were to stay as insects and therefore forbidden to lean backwards on our chairs in his library. But the second was a life changing event – how to find a book and never be overwhelmed by a library in pursuit of knowledge. It was achieved by using a standardised classification process, the Dewey Decimal System.
Why then can’t we use a consistent knowledge process to support us in organizing own family keepsakes?
